Taittinger’s Folies de la Marquetterie NV holds a lot of history in its name, paying homage to the beautiful Château de la Marquetterie that is responsible for the birth of Champagne Taittinger. This iconic building played a large role in the first World War, which is how Pierre Taittinger came to fall in love with the property. He was stationed there as a liaison for the military staff and vowed to return after the war. Indeed, he did return – with his brother-in-law – and purchased the estate.
Folies de la Marquetterie is Taittinger’s single estate cuvée. It was formerly a single vineyard cuvée, made only from the vineyards surrounding the property – ‘Les Folies’. Yields for this wine were very low and its rich style was made with foodies in mind. Today, it still follows the same style and can pair wonderfully with fish and white meats. However, grapes for this wine are now supplemented with top parcels sourced from the family’s various vineyards, all of which are more than 45 years old. This offers greater diversity and an opportunity to be even more selective for what remains a tiny production of this wine while remaining true to its gastronomic roots and the fresh, elegant Taittinger style.
